Basketball

Fenerbahçe Ulker v FC Barcelona

Euroleague (Group C, Round 4) Thursday November at 9.00 PM CET

After losing their first game in the Liga Endesa at home to FIATC Joventut on Sunday, FC Barcelona now have to refocus for this trip to Istanbul. Wins against Bayern Munich, EA7 Milano and PGE Turów mean they are 3-0 and top of their six-team group, while their Turkish hosts are 2-1 after being beaten for the first time in the campaign at Panathinaikos last week.

Ever since Fenerbahçe SK and Ülker Gençlik merged in 2006 to form a superclub, Thursday’s opponent has had one of the highest budgets and strongest rosters in the Euroleague. Since 2012, they have played at the Ulker Sports Arena, a brand new pavilion that holds 15,000 people and is considered one of the finest basketball venues in Europe. And coach Zeljko Obradovic has won the continental crown eight times. But in terms of history, Barça are 20-5 overall against the Turks, and 8-4 when the games have been played in Istanbul.

This season, Fenerbahçe have brought in big scorer Andrew Goudelock, a former European champion with Maccabi, Ricky Hickman, young Serbian Bogdan Bogdanovic and Jan Vesely of the Czech Republic, fresh back from the NBA. With the likes of Kenan Sipahi, Emir Preldzic, Nemanja Bjelica, Luka Zoric and Semih Erden alongside them, Xavi Pascual will need to bring out the best in his team on Thursday night in Istanbul.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu and vice-president Jordi Cardoner led the club's representatives at the funeral of the legandary defender

Gustau Biosca i Pagès, who died on November 1 at the age of 86, was given a heartfelt farewell today by relatives, friends, former team-mates and representatives of FC Barcelona, the club where he helped write one of the most glorious periods in its history as a member of the emblematic team of the Five Cups.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu and the vice-president of the Social Area, Jordi Cardoner, led the Barça delegation along with director Silvio Elías at the funeral held today in Les Corts.

Other mourners included the president of the Barça Players Group, Ramon Alfonseda, and several other members of that association, of which Gustau Biosca was once president. Former FCB president Josep Lluís Núñez was also in attendance, as was Joan Trayter, former president of the managerial board in 2003, and his son Joan Manuel, the current Members Trustee.

Biosca’s family, his widow Roser, his four children, Sílvia, Sergi, Gustau and Cèsar, and his in-laws and grandchildren, received copious displays of condolence and admiration. Gustau Biosca was one of the warmest and most charismatic players of his era, and was a man who always held FC Barcelona very close to his heart.

Statement by president Josep Maria Bartomeu

“The death of Gustau Biosca is a very heartfelt loss. He was always so charismatic, a true Barça man, who helped the team both as a footballer and after. We will miss him. Today we pay homage to the players of the 1940s generation and the Team of the Five Cups, one of whom was Gustau Biosca. We had been preparing this tribute for a long time, and today it has more meaning than ever. We must thank these players for everything they have done for Barcelona. These players deserve to live and feel our recognition”.

The memory of Gustau Biosca was very present as FC Barcelona honoured a group of players that wore the club colours in one of its most glorious eras

Gustau Biosca, who died on Saturday and whose funeral took place earlier today, was on everyone’s minds as FC Barcelona and the Agrupació Barça Jugadors (Barça Players Group) went ahead with the ceremony to honour the players of the 1940s generation and the team that famously won the Five Cups. The venue was the Auditori 1899 and those in attendance included the president of FC Barcelona Josep Maria Bartomeu, vice-president Jordi Cardoner and directors Silvio Elias and Pau Vilanova, plus the president of the ABJ, Ramon Alfonseda.

The 1940s players being honoured were Ferran Argila and Vicenç Martínez, who attended the event, and Enrique Martín, while the players that won the Five Cups were Gustau Biosca (represented by his son César), Miquel Ferrer, Jaume Peiró, Joaquim Tejedor, Josep Duró (represented by his wife Rosa Pérez), Miquel Torra and Enric Roselló. They also received copies of the Monument to the FC Barcelona Players by sculptress Rosa Serra that was recently inaugurated in the club offices.

Reporter Pere Escobar and FC Barcelona historian Carles Santacana spoke about that amazing era of club history and the guests were shown a video of some of the finest moments.

Extract from speech by FCB president Josep Maria Bartomeu:

“Today is a very special day for us all. Today we have said farewell to Gustau Biosca, one of the greatest and most historic players and one so emblematic of the Barça of the Five Cups. Destiny wanted Gustau to be one of the players here today. A tribute to the members of that legendary team and the generation of the 1940s.

Ferran Argila and Vicenç Martínez were at the club through the difficult post-war years. Gustau Biosca, Quique Martín, Joaquim Tejedor, Jaume Peiró, Josep Duró, Miquel Ferrer, Miquel Torra and Enric Roselló were in the team of the Five Cups and wrote one of the most glorious pages in the history of our club.

It is easier for the players now. The club is stronger, and they owe that to you. We are indebted to the players that made this club great. You all defended the Barça colours. You represented the values we believe in, which go much further beyond victories and titles. These are commitment, sentiment and the strength of Barça. The club supports the wonderful work done by the Agrupació Barça Jugadors and will always be at your side”.

Extract from speech by ABJ president Ramon Alfonseda:

“We are here to honour an important era and an unmatchable generation. The exceptional circumstances of the death of Gustau Biosca further stress how important the players and people that have done so much for this club are. I would like to thank you for what you have given us. People and players like you have helped us find the way to become better and to make Barça greater.

A few days ago, we inaugurated the Monument to the Player, a statue that symbolises everyone. Here at the Group we work to make the club’s history part of its day-to-day. We work to make sure that unrepeatable players and people like you can feel proud of feeling part of such a glorious era”.

Medals and badges

Following the ceremony, medals and badges were presented to the people who have been members of the Group for 10, 15 and 25 years. This event was first held in 2012 and is a biennial celebration of the longest-serving members of the association. Those who have been members for 10 and 15 years get bronze and silver medals, respectively, and those that have been members for 25 years get a silver badge.

‘L’Últim partit’ (The last match), a documentary film about how Johan Cruyff was signed by FC Barcelona to spark a sporting, social and cultural resolution in Catalonia was premiered today at the Auditori, in the presence of the President of Catalonia, Artur Mas. Barça vice-president Jordi Mestre and directors Susana Monje and Toni Freixa were among the other guests.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu was unable to attend because the event coincided with the tribute to the veterans of the 1940s and Five Cups in the Camp Nou.

‘L’Últim partit’ tells the story of the Dutch star’s arrival and impact from the point of view of different people involved in some way or other with the 40 years that Cruyff has spent in Catalonia. Directed by Jordi Marcos, it provides fascinating new insight into one of the most relevant and historic moments in club history.

France is hosting the European Football Championship in the summer of 2016, meaning that all of the major sports stadiums in the country will be in use at the time of the rugby final. The LNR decided to look into alternative options, and decided that the Barça stadium would be the perfect solution.

Marc Bartra personalised his Nike Air Max 1
Fans can now express their love for the club by personalising the sports shoe with the famous crest Marc Bartra was the first to wear the Barça themed Air Max 1 i on the trip to Amsterdam

Futbol Club Barcelona fans can now express their love for the club by wearing the new personalised Air Max 1 with the famous crest. Using the NikeiD service at the official online Barça store nike.com/fcb fans can select from a variety of options to personalise the world famous Air Max 1.

You can select all kinds of services to create your own personal Air Max 1, from adding a slogan or personalised iD on the inside of the tongue, choosing between the classic Air Max technology or Lunarlon, and even personalising the laces. The only limit is your imagination, and every shoe is different and authentic.

Bartra, first to try out his new Air Max 1 FCB

First team defender Marc Bartra was the first to don the new Air Max 1 in the company of Instagrammer Misshedwig (@misshedwig), who is also an art director and joined the player as he designed his very own Air Max 1. Following Misshedwig’s advice, Bartra picked bright, lively colours and opted to include his own name and surname on the tongue of his brand new pair of Air Max 1 FCB shoes.

He was seen wearing them for the first time on the team’s trip to Amsterdam to play in the Champions League.

CUSTOMISE AND BUY

Thanks to NikeiD, any FCB can now wear trainers in the colours of their favourite team, adding a club crest and any slogan they like (for example, ‘Barça, Barça, Barça’ or ‘Més que un club’). Misshedwig has also made a series of Air Max 1 FCB designs to share from today with his followers and with Marc Bartra via social networks.

Marc Bartra commented that "the Barça colours are a part of my life. Trainers with the FC Barcelona crest are as good as it gets for me. I was wearing the FCB shirt when I was one year old and these colours are now part of my skin."

The options to personalise Air Max 1 shoes are available for both children’s and adult sizes.

President Bartomeu, interviewed by Dutch daily ‘De Telegraaf’

Josep Maria Bartomeu was speaking to 'De Telegraaf'
“We should all be grateful to Cruyff” he said in reference to the Ajax influence on FC barcelona. “We are Ajax's son, but as in life, the son sometimes outdoes the father”

Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf on occasion of the Champions League game with Ajax on Wednesday in the Amsterdam Arena. He had a lot to say about the many links between the Dutch club and FC Barcelona, and particularly the shared legacy of Johan Cruyff.

Cruyff “was even more important for Barça as a manager than he was as a player” he commented. “He changed everything about the professional environment here. He changed our way of thinking through his ideas about football, how he interpreted games, and how the club as a whole was run … He saw how much talent there was in the Masia, and gave all that talent a chance to play in the first team.”

[[CITA_1]]The president is convinced that Barça’s style of play owes a lot to Ajax. “Johan believed in that” he says. “I think it was wonderful. Others wouldn’t have taken the risk. He did! His philosophy became characteristic of how Barça play. If you ask anyone around the world which two clubs have the best academies, they’ll surely say Ajax and FC Barcelona".

Josep Maria Bartomeu also spoke about Cruyff’s influence on Pep Guardiola. “He was Pep’s inspiration” he said. “As a player and as a manager he owes a lot to Johan. Pep had many different managers during his playing career, but it was from Johan that he learned the most”.

[[CITA_2]]He describes Barça as the ‘sons of Ajax’, which he explained by saying that “for years we have been observing what young clubs like Ajax do, how they train and how they are organised. We learned a lot from Ajax. That’s especially thanks to Johan. But as in life, the son sometimes outdoes the father. We’re lucky to have more financial resources than Ajax … Ajax can feel proud of what we’ve achieved at Barcelona. And Johan can feel proud of what Pep Guardiola achieved. Here again, the son was even more successful than the father. But for us, Pep is Johan’s footballing son. But it’s not about envy, it’s all about pure pride”.

Sergi Samper, Marta Corredera and Carles Puyol all received awards from the Catalan Football Federation The Barça President Josep Maria Bartomeu was present at the event accompanied by Jordi Mestre, Pau Vilanova and the blaugrana nominees

Special moment in memory of Tito Vilanova

During the 'Night of the Stars' the Catalan Football Federation remembered former FC Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova via a moving video tribute that provoked a great ovation from those present at the gala in the Old Estrella Damm Factory.

On Tuesday evening the 3rd edition of the ‘Night of the Stars of Catalan Football’ took place at the Old Estrella Damm Factory venue in Barcelona. As in the previous two editions, FC Barcelona took centre stage with awards for several blaugranes. Sergi Samper, Marta Corredera and Carles Puyol were all named amongst the winners at the gala event with other sportsmen and women nominated in various categories.

Three blaugrana winners

The fist Barça player to receive an award was Sergi Samper who took the prize for the ‘Most Promising Catalan Player’ category. The Barça B midfielder was unable to collect his award personally as he on international duty with the Spanish U21 squad. Instead a video of Samper thanking the Federation for his award was played with FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu picking up the prize in his place. The Club President led a large Barça delegation that also included Sporting Vice Preisident Jordi Mestre, club director Pau Vilanova as well as Pere Gratacós the Director of Institutional Football Relations.

The next blaugrana to be recognised was Marta Corredera. The winger from the Barça Women’s team received the award for ‘Best Catalan Female Player’, a prize that she also claimed last season. She took the accolades ahead of fellow blaugrana nominees Vicky Losada and Alexia Putelles. Women’s coach Xavi Llorens was also nominated in the category of ‘Best Catalan Coach’.  Finally Carles Puyol was rewarded in recognition of his efforts during his long and highly successful time as a player. The former Barça captain was presented with a special award by the Jury after a trophy laden career with the first team that helped convert him into a point of reference in Catalan football.

The President Josep Maria Bartomeu, in the name of FC Barcelona, congratulates newspapers 'Mundo Deportivo' and 'Sport' for reaching important landmarks

In recent weeks FC Barcelona has had the fortune to congratulate not one but two national sports newspapers for reaching important landmarks in their respective histories. At the end of October ‘Mundo Deportivo’, the oldest sports newspaper in the country, published its 30,000th edition since the publication’s inception way back in 1906. The Club President Josep Maria Bartomeu added his voice to those from home and from abroad recognising the paper’s achievement in a special supplement that was published to mark the occasion: “Many congratulations to ‘Mundo Deportivo’ and their readers for edition number 30,000. Well done because it is no easy feat to reach 30,000, it’s an historic achievement.”

35 years of Sport

At the beginning of November there were also congratulations for the newspaper ‘Sport’, who celebrated their 35th anniversary. President Josep Maria Bartomeu formed part of a large party of representatives from the club who attended an event at the Old Estrella Damm Factory in Barcelona to celebrate the landmark in the publication’s history. The president had kind words for the paper which ‘for 35 years has covered FC Barcelona, bringing all the latest news at the Club to the great family that is our fans and our members.’

The journal Digital Sports Media has placed FC Barcelona top of the global football ranking with a digital fanbase of more than 117 million followers The data collected by prestigious social consultancy RESULT has once against positioned FC Barcelona ahead of the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United

More than a million new fans a week

Barça has gained about 60 million new followers in 2014, which amounts to an average increase of 1.3 million a week. The main Facebook account has 30 million new followers this year, taking the overall figure to 79 million. Some five million new fans are following the club’s 15 Twitter accounts and other platforms such as Line and Instagram have also witnessed major booms.
And it’s not just the football team that’s raising so much interest. Barça’s handball team has a digital reach of 3,928,154 people, more than all of the next 24 teams together. And the 4 million followers of their Facebook account make the Barça roller hockey team the most digitally popular in the world.

The journal Digital Sports Media, which specialises in sports and new technologies, has once again declared FC Barcelona to be the world leader on digital media with more than 117 million followers. Prestigious social consultancy RESULT has analysed the presence of the world’s biggest clubs on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Google +, and has once again ranked the Catalan giants ahead of Real Madrid (108 million) and Manchester United (70).

But the club’s presence extends way beyond those five networks. Barça can also be found on Line, WeChat, Sina Weibo, Dailymotion and Pinterest, which were not included in the DSM study. Counting these other platforms, Barça has gained 60 million followers so far in 2014.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As the club’s director of new technologies, Dídac Lee, has said, "FC Barcelona’s focus on digital media means much more than merely being the most followed club in the world. Today we are able to communicate with our fans via forty different channels and in nine different languages.”

Video has played a particularly prominent role in recent months, with Barça now featuring on Dailymotion and Vine in addition to YouTube and Instagram, thus exponentially expanding its audiovisual offer. The aim is to improve the experience for Barça supporters and to respond to the demands for such content due, among other factors, to greater bandwidths and more advanced mobile devices.

“This global presence allows us, at the same time, to generate a whole series of monetary assets” adds Lee. “It is a source of income that made some 30 million euros for the club last season.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt 33-37 FC Barcelona

Champions League (Group B, Round 5) Saturday November 15

In a marvellous performance, Barça beat the defending European champions, Flensburg, the side that knocked them out of the competition at the semi-final stage last season. Lazarov, with ten goals, was the star of a game that sets the Catalans up very nicely for a place in the next round.

Neither side was able to make any kind of break in the first half, which ended 16-16, and things were still right going into the final stages of the game, when a 4-1 streak for Barça finally put some space between the two teams at 25-29. From then on it was a case of maintaining that four-point cushion, which particularly meant containing Kaufmann, who led the German attack in the final moments. But Barça kept their nerve and the win keeps them joint top of the group along with KIF Kolding of Denmark.

And they got what they wanted to keep up the pressure on OK Liga leaders Inter Movistar with a win against top flight debutants Uruguay Tenerife. But although the final score suggests it was an easy ride, it was nothing but.

The visitors, 12th in the table, took a surprise 3-2 lead after 17 minutes, and the two teams were deadlocked at 3-3 at half time. The second half, however, saw a much sharper performance from the Catalans, who scored four goals to no reply with Lozano completing a hat-trick.
