Dídac Lee welcomes to Camp Nou representatives of the annual event that is dedicated to design and innovation

The director for the Area of Media and Communication and responsibility for New Technologies, Dídac Lee, welcomed on Monday a delegation from the Business of Design Week (BODW), an important annual event dedicated to design and innovation that is organised in Hong Kong at the beginning of December every year since 2002. FC Barcelona are planning to collaborate with this initiative actively via its office in China.

The representatives from BODW have met FC Barcelona first hand and their brand marketing strategy via a presentation carried out by Dídac Lee , who spoke to the representatives in Chinese, and the CEO of the Club, Ignacio Mestre. Immediately afterwards a group photo was also taken at Camp Nou, as the party also received a guided visit of the Club’s facilities.

For the very first time, the week of design, planned for 30 November to 5 December, will have a city associated, Barcelona. The excellent relationship between Barcelona and Hong Kong and the excellent position of the Catalan city as an innovative creative centre for design, have been key in this decision. The project will go under the title of Barcelona Inspires Design.

Barcelona’s participation in the BODW will be based on three main areas. Barcelona will construct a pavilion at the Innovation, Design and Technology Fair (IDT Expo) that is organised at the fair’s location in Hong Kong. Furthermore, the Catalan capital will share its knowledge and expertise with experts participating in the BODW Forum. Finally during the week, BODW will organise a series of events linked to Barcelona in order to really welcome the city into the process.

Dídac Lee:

“The city of Barcelona is invited to Hong Kong to participate in Business Design Week, that for the first time is associated with a city and not a state. For some years now, FC Barcelona has seen the Chinese market as one of the most strategic for the club. It is for that reason that we opened an office in Hong Kong. This initiative is great for the Club’s expansion and to promote the city of Barcelona. We will give the greatest possible support to the city on behalf of the Club and via our office in China.”

Comunicat FC Barcelona
The agreements reached by the Board of Directors this Monday

The Board of Directors, following on from their meeting on Monday, would like to congratulate the first team for their season so far and to encourage members to continue to offer their support to the team for the forthcoming weeks during which there will be vital matches in all three competitions.
During the board meeting the following agreements have been reached:

  • To confirm that the Santiago Bernabéu would be the most adequate venue for the Spanish Cup final, given that it would be ground which could hold the greatest number of fans.
  • The contracting of the multinational company Ernst&Young to oversee and audit the building works of the new Miniestadi, in line with the first stage of the new Espai Barça, which will be presented on Friday 27 at 12.00pm CET in the press room at the Ciuitat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
  • Renewal for another year of the contract with Panasonic TV Devices as a global partner

Legal request

On another matter, the Board of Directors discussed the opening of a court case against FC Barcelona, its president Josep Maria Bartomeu and its ex-president Sandro Rosell, with regards
to the Neymar case. On this matter the Board would like to make the following observations:

  1. Both the Club and its president reiterate their total innocence before a matter which only has financial not criminal liability, the legal differences of which should be settled on an administrative level, not in a National Court.
  2. The legal profession has commented on the process and its consequences, considering it to be inappropriate. The haste with which the judicial authorities have acted in this matter is also a subject that has been considered inappropriate also. The legal representative of all the involved parties will present their corresponding appeals immediately, denouncing the circumstances and the lack of any tangible crime.
  3. The president of the Club, before what is considered a “great injustice”, reiterates the fact that he will continue with his intention to stand in the forthcoming elections for the Club Presidency and continue to lead the organisation with the same belief in leading by example, exercising financial control and respecting the members that he has shown until this day, focusing every effort on maintaining the Club as a reference point on a global scale
  4. The Board would like to thanks the members for their understanding and support during the current time.

Ramon Cierco scales down responsibilities

Finally, the Board of Directors have accepted a scaling down of Ramon Cierco’s responsibilities with the director relinquishing his role in youth football and the FC Barcelona Foundation. Ramon Cierco will continue as a member of the Board of Directors.

30 years since Venables claims league title

30 YEARS SINCE URRUTI
Barça's Basque keeper saves a penalty that hands FC Barcelona their first league title in 11 years

It is 30 years to the day since FC Barcelona claimed a memorable victory over Valladolid to clinch their first league title in 11 years. English coach Terry Venables was in his first season in charge at the club and he brought immediate success to the Catalan club with a famous penalty save from goalkeeper Javier Urruticoechea handing the league trophy to the blaugranes and unleashing emotional scenes of celebration after more than a decade of frustration.

Barça began the 1984/85 season without superstar Diego Maradona who had been sold to Serie A side Napoli in the summer. A new coach was brought to the club in the form of Venables and he brought with his Scottish striker Steve Archibald to try and fill the gap left by the Argentine’s departure. The league campaign could not have got off to a better start with the new boss claiming a 3-0 victory in the Santiago Bernabéu on the first weekend of the season. Archibald chipped in with 15 goals in the league, making him the club’s top scorer and leaving the fans in no doubt as to his ability to replace Maradona. The blaugranes led the table from the opening day of the season right until the end, the title being clinched with an away win in the José Zorilla Stadium on 24 March 1985.

An historic penalty save

The victory that handed FC Barcelona the league title for the first time in 11 years is remembered not only as the moment that the drought of league championships came to an end, but also for the penalty save that was the defining event of that emotional campaign. Barça were 2-1 up away at Valladolid thanks to goals from Paco Clos and Alexanko. The league trophy as in touching distance after a long and often difficult period in which the ultimate prize had eluded the blaugranes. Then, with just three minutes remaining in the game, referee Sánchez Arminio awarded the home side a penalty. It appeared the cava would have to be put on ice. However, fate had other ideas and goalkeeper Urruti, as he was known to almost everyone, saved Mágico González’s spot kick to unleash joyous celebrations on the pitch amongst the players and elsewhere amongst the fans. The penalty save is cemented into the Club’s history in part also thanks to the memorable reaction of commentator Joaquim Maria Puyal. The man who for most Barça fans was the voice of the blaugranes via his much loved radio commentary for Catalunya Rádio, could not contain his joy at the Barça keeper’s penalty save, crying out, “Urruti saves, Urruti saves, Urruti I love you, Urruti I love you…” A fitting way to celebrate one of the most memorable league titles in the Club’s long and illustrious history.

FC Barcelona is the first club in the world to open its doors to the movement The #empty event that took place at the stadium is the first in all of Spain

The Camp Nou opened only for a small group of people. This is the dream of many Barcelona fans that came true Wednesday for an exclusive group of nearly 20 Instagrammers. The #empty InstaMeet movement event held at the Club’s facilities is the first ever in Spain, while Barça became the first club in the world to open its doors to an event such as this.

The purpose of this encounter is to give Instagram users the chance to take and publish unique photos in and around the stadium offering different perspectives in an environment free of any outside influence, giving the snapshots a highly exclusive nature.

Instagram users enjoyed total access to Camp Nou: Luxury boxes, the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms, the coaches’ area, the playing surface and the FCB Museum. What began as a typical tour became a true surprise. They were able to test their photographic creativity with the Club’s last Champions League trophy and one of Leo Messi’s four FIFA Ballon d'Or awards.

Excitement and creativity

David Cuena, the organizer of this #empty event and community manager of Instagram Spain and Latin America, appreciated the excellent opportunity given Instagram. "Camp Nou is a place that is always crowded. Having it just for us is great for the Instagram community because it can make for some truly unique photographs focused on detail and other things that normally go unnoticed," he said.

He also praised the excitement of the event. "Many of those participating were fans whose legs trembled when they saw two trophies as valuable as that of the Champions League and Messi’s FIFA Ballon d’Or. It was a real thrill and it's great that their passions can be lived through their mobile phones," Cuena concluded.

Some of the participants, along with David Cuena, felt great mixing their passion for Barça with photography. Instagrammer Sandra Blasco stressed the emotional component of Camp Nou. "The photographs perfectly reflect the thrill of the Club, of which there is plenty in our opinion." Finally, Instagram user Albert Muñoz praised Camp Nou as a unique space with "awesome architectural dimensions that let you play around with photography.”

The European Club Association announces important agreements with UEFA and FIFA following the General Assembly on Tuesday in Stockholm

Josep Maria Bartomeu continued on Tuesday his participation in the ECA (European Clubs Association) General Assembly that has been taking place in Stockholm, Sweden. The organisation has announced important agreements with both UEFA and FIFA that affect the clubs.

In the meeting those present were informed that for the first time in its history that the ECA would have two seats on UEFA’s Executive Committee for their representatives. Furthermore, also in relation to UEFA, it was announced that from now on the Football Club Council would replace the current Club Competition Committee. This new Council will have considerable greater influence in the taking of top level decisions. Furthermore, an improvement in financial conditions has been achieved, with UEFA offering a minimum of €200 million in compensation to the clubs who release players for the 2016 European Championships.

With regards to FIFA, the clubs have agreed upon the creation of the Department of Professional Football that is comprised of FIFA along with representatives from the clubs via ECA and from the players via FIFPro. This new organ will serve as a platform to debate various subjects related to professional football. So, from now on all changes in the international calendar and rules and regulations on the status and transferring of players will require ECA consent. In financial matters, FIFA have accepted trebling the compensation paid to the clubs for releasing players ahead of the next two World Cups in Russia and Qatar.

The 15th General Assembly of the ECA will take place on 7 and 8 September of 2015 in Geneva.

A Barça side coached by Rinus Michels and containing Johan Cruyff clinch the league title with five games to go

It had been 14 long years without success in the league. Barça faced Sporting Gijón in El Molinón in week 29 of the 1973/74 campaign knowing victory would hand them the championship for the first time in over a decade. After a poor start to the season, the side coached by Rinus Michels and bolstered by the arrival of Dutchman Johan Cruyff went from strength to strength. An historic 0-5 win in the Santiago Bernabéu set the tone and with five games still to go in the campaign they claimed their prize with a 4-2 win in Asturias against Sporting.

A hat trick from Marcial and a goal from Charly Rexach gave them the win they needed and at the final whistle the party began. Barça president at the time Agustí Montal summed it up well when after the game he said: “After 14, this a great reward for everybody’s hard work.” Peruvian striker Hugo Sotil also captured the moment when he called home with the good news: “Mum, we are Champions!” were his first words.

He met his partner Liu Jian at work and they used to go to watch Barça games together. The FCB stadium is the perfect destination for many newlywed Chinese couples, which was also the place Yu Rui and Huang Yan chose to visit on their own honeymoon.

Yu Rui explains with a laugh that “I started supporting Barça when I was very young and I found out that I was born on the same day as Leo Messi.” He jokingly adds that he loves the Argentinian more than his wife! “Sorry, but I knew about him first” he continues. “He was a role model for me. Although we live so far away, I can compare myself to him and have noticed many similarities.”
