Press release with regards to the UEFA sanction / FCB
The Club maintains its respect for the sanction relating to the Champions League final in Berlin, yet does not agree with it

FC Barcelona respects UEFA’s decision that was relayed to the Club on Thursday in relation to the Champions League final in Berlin, however, it does not agree with that decision, especially in the light of the UEFA delegate’s description of the Barça members and fans’ behaviour as excellent, both before, during and after the game, as stated in their report.

With the aim of defending the rights of the Club and its members and while respecting current legislation, the Club’s legal services will consider the possibility of questioning the fine announced today, Thursday. Our conviction is that the rights of the Club and members are not incompatible with current legislation.

The FC Barcelona and Twitter representatives in San Francisco / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB
Player joined by other representatives of FC Barcelona on a trip to the technology giant's central offices in San Francisco

There was much excitement at the central offices of Twitter in San Francisco today when none other than Gerard Piqué himself popped by to say hello. The midfielder was crowded by employees eager to get selfies with him and there were even cries in Catalan of “Visca el Barça!” The player was joined on the visit by the club’s director of Marketing and Communication Manel Arroyo and Communications Director Albert Montagut.

Katie Stanton, the VP of Global Media at Twitter, acted as the perfect host, showing her guests around the plush offices and explaining some of the future actions being prepared for the social network, and which are set to appear this autumn. The focus of the new characteristics is what is being called the Lighting Project, which will “change the way we consume news forever”.

After posing for photos and exchanging gifts, Piqué described how impressed he was by the microblogging giant. “I’d love to work for Twitter” he said. “I think it’s a wonderful tool for communicating and it’s the only social network that I manage myself personally.”

He went on to say that “Twitter allows you to express the feelings that sport produces.” Asked more specifically about the team’s progress, he commented that “it is difficult to keep winning but we’re going to do everything possible to make sure we do.”

Manel Arroyo described how it is Barça’s intention to work closely with Twitter, commenting that “I don’t only think that Twitter is changing the future of communication. It is changing its present too.”

The president of FC Barcelona, Josep Maria Bartomeu, spoke to The Washington Post following UEFA's announcement of a $33,000 fine for the Club stemming from the appearance of pro-Catalan independence flags at the Champions League final in Berlin on 6 June.

Here's what Bartomeu told the Post:

"FC Barcelona has always defended, and will always defend, freedom of speech."

Jordi Cardoner and Silvio Elías visiting the Penya Barcelonista de Washington DC / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB
The FC Barcelona directors thank its Washington based fans for their unconditional support and offer them the chance to take photos with the treble trophies

The Penya Barcelonista de Washington D.C. was founded in 2009 by just 15 members who until then had only been able to watch soccer matches on TV and didn’t even know each other. They have gone from strength to strength since then, and now gather about 200 people for each Barça game.

The club is made of people from all over the Americas, and also a fair number of people from Catalonia that are either working in Washington or that are the descendants of second or even third generation Catalans. But what they all share is a passion for all things FCB, including its world famous philosophy and values.

Today was a very special day for them, for they were able to welcome FC Barcelona directors Jordi Cardoner and Silvio Elías to their meeting place, a bar in the city centre that simply oozes with Barça in every corner. Almost everyone was wearing a Barça shirt for the occasion, many of them bearing the club’s witty catchphrase of ‘District of Culémbia’. The Barça representatives were particularly amused by the flag, where the traditional red and white stripes on the American flag have been replaced by the yellow and red of the Catalan ‘senyera’.

Check out the video, and wait until you see the amazing car that one of the members drives! And to think there are still people who claim that there is no passion for soccer in the United States!

    Work for chairity

Raimon Puigjaner is the president of the P.B. de Washington D.C., a Catalan who moved to the States in 2009 to work for the World Bank. He now has his own company that promotes social cooperation and development. His experience means that his supporters club, or ‘penya’, also devotes much of its efforts to similar work in benefit of the people living in the more underprivileged neighbourhoods of the US capital. All in all, this is a club that does a tremendous job upholding the famous tradition of solidarity that has so typified Barça throughout its history.

Josep Maria Bartomeu during the tour of the US / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB
In an interview with ESPN, the blaugrana president takes a look at the Club's current position and highlights the challenge of winning six trophies this season

Josep Maria Bartomeu sees the Barça first team facing a “dream season” with the squad in with a chance of claiming six titles over the coming campaign. “Last season we won three trophies and this time there are six that we can win. It’s a dream season. Let’s hope that every year we can start the season with six great trophies to win. For that reason we need a competitive side, a winning team and with the players we have brought in, there is squad to do it,” affirmed the blaugrana president in an interview with ESPN on the subject of the recent tour to the USA.

Bartomeu also touched on the recent signings who will not be able to play until the month of January 2016: “For the majority of footballers, playing for Barça is a dream. For Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan, it is not a problem not being able to play until January.” On the subject of Pedro’s future, the Barça president admitted “we are not planning to let anyone go as we are putting the squad together.” He added: “It is the squad that our coach wanted.”

“Six trophies is an exciting challenge”

Another of the names that came up in the interview is that of Leo Messi. On the Argentine, Bartomeu commented “he has a lot of support and he comes back with the desire to keep making history at the Club.” “Messi is the best player in Barça’s history and in the history of football. This year, both he and his team mates have a great challenge ahead of them, the six trophies. It’s an exciting challenge for everyone,” the Barça president commented.

Finally, on the signing of Neymar, Bartomeu assured everyone that “slowly but surely, it will die down.” “It’s a financial matter between Spain and Brazil regarding taxation, but there is no crime,” reiterated the president.

Josep Maria Bartomeu speaking to the supporters clubs at their 36th congress / VÍCTOR SALGADO-FCB
The president addresses the supporters clubs about his vision of a leading and even more global Barça

FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu addressed the 36th World Congress of Penyes (supporters clubs) on Wednesday morning, discussing the present and future of a variety of different aspects of the club, and especially the challenges ahead after his candidacy won the elections on July 18:

    • Create a Barça Observatory and University, making it the only club to share its knowledge by means of its own university.
    • Create the Masia 360º, to ensure that athletes and coaches remain attached to the club after retirement.
    • Foster women’s sport to put Barça at the forefront of its development.

“We need to be even more global” said Bartomeu to a packed assembly hall. “We want Barça to be even bigger leaders but for there to be room for us all … In sporting terms, we are engaged in a new winning cycle. We are hopeful about the new season and want to win all six trophies and then become the first team to win the Champions League twice in a row. And we have the best attacking trio in the world to help us do that. Messi, Neymar Jr and Luis Suárez deserve to be the three finalists for the FIFA Balon d’Or.

Moving onto finances, he proudly stated that “we are the first club in the world, of any sport, to break the barrier of 600 million in income.” And when discussing the club’s social weight, he commented that “counting members and supporters clubs there are 300,000 Barça fans and no club in the world can compare with those figures.”

The supporters club movement is one that Bartomeu is especially impressed by, and he thanked them for all of their good work and wished them all the best with their long-term plans for the period between now and 2021.

    Freedom of expression

Bartomeu also commented on UEFA’s sanction after flags supporting Catalan independence were seen at the final in Berlin. “Nobody should think that we did not appeal out of weakness” he said. “I said we’d take this matter to the end, and we will. We are responding in the way that best characterises us - thinking about the club’s interests and those of Catalonia. We will be firm but cool-headed. We will use all the legal and diplomatic options we have. That’s because we think that the best for us and for everyone is respect for freedom of expression in keeping with our club’s values and identity.”

Camp Nou will have a new playing surface for the first home game of the league season against Málaga. The process of replacing the old pitch began on Tuesday and is scheduled to finish on Saturday. Unlike in other seasons, the operation is a simple case of replacing the grass with the new turf which has come all the way from Bordeaux in France.

Work began straight after the conclusion of the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic Club on Monday evening when the first few rows of the seating at Camp Nou to allow the machinery to enter onto the pitch. On Tuesday work continued with the removal of the posts and corner flags which was followed by cleaning the sprinklers and the removal of the old pitch.

The new pitch consists of some 8,500m² of turf which will arrive on Wednesday and the following the laying of the new playing surface will begin. Preparations will continue into next week in time for the game against Málaga on Saturday 29 August at 8.30pm CET.

    Change after two seasons

The pitch is being replaced after two seasons after extensive monitoring by the Club’s Department of Operations. Last season was an exceptionally long campaign and this summer, in particular the months of May and June saw unusually high temperatures, two factors that caused problems for the playing surface.
