The Camp Nou pays tribute to the authors of ‘Cant del Barça’

The Club recognises Josep Maria Espinàs and Jaume Picas, authors of the words, and Manuel Valls, composer of the music “The anthem is more widely accepted. It's very beautiful,” says Espinàs

Debut in 1974

It’s worth noting that the ‘Cant del Barça’ made its debut on November 27 of 1974 at the Camp Nou, during the 75th anniversary of FC Barcelona. It was sung by a choir 3,500 people, and it was directed by Oriol Martorell. Today, the ‘Cant del Barça’ is one of the most popular songs in the country and it’s sung by thousands of Barça fans from around the world.

Before the match against Deportivo, the Camp Nou and FC Barcelona paid tribute to the authors of the ‘Cant del Barça,’ the name of the Club's official anthem. The ‘Cant del Barça’ was written by Josep Maria Espinàs and Jaume Picas, and the music was composed by Manuel Valls. Espinàs, the only one who is still alive, was acknowledged by the Club and the fans.

Recognised by the Club

First, President Sandro Rosell gave the Espinàs a Barça strip with the author’s name on it, during an event that was also attended by the widow of Picas, the son of Manuel Vallas, the ex-President Agustí Montal and Antoni Ros-Marbà, orchestra director when the anthem was first written. “I tried to make it singable, with short sentences and with the emphasis on the right parts. Many years have gone by and the anthem is becoming widely accepted. It’s beautiful,” said Espinàs.

Before the beginning of the match, Espinàs was given the chance to address to the fans at the Camp Nou. Here’s his speech in its entirety:

“Nearly 40 years have passed since a Board of Directors thought the Club needed its own anthem. I think it’s appropriate to congratulate Agustí Montal for his idea. Many other administrations have passed as have many years, perhaps too many, before President Rosell’s Board decided to publicly recognise the authors of the anthem.

“Neither Jaume Picas nor the composer Manuel Valls are with us. I am still here to thank you for this acknowledgement, and a very big thank you to the Barcelonistas who have adopted and made this anthem yours.

“The ‘Cant del Barça’ represents, in addition to a great Club, Barcelona and Catalonia throughout the world. We saw a group of young Japanese fans dressed up in Barça kits sing the song in Catalan.

“But the anthem belongs to you. It represents what you love. It represents what you feel.

“It’s a great joy to be able to sing it with all of you. Never forget: ‘Tots units fem força. Visca el Barça!’”

“Quit smoking with Barça”
The programme is a collaborative effort between FC Barcelona and the European Commission. This notable achievement comes less than three months since the launch of the collaboration

Today, an important benchmark of more than 60,000 smokers across Europe has been reached with the innovative smoking cessation programme, ‘Quit Smoking With Barça’ (www.quitsmokingwithbarca.eu). This programme is a collaborative effort between FC Barcelona (FCB) and the European Commission. This notable achievement comes less than three months since the launch of the collaboration.

Quit Smoking With Barça’ is an innovative online platform that provides evidence-based advice, customised support and daily smoking cessation tips to smokers; from the hearts and mouths of Barça’s star players, coaching team and staff. This free support is available via the programme’s mobile app, the FCB iCoach, that guides smokers through a 5 phase process designed to transition them gently towards a healthier, smoke-free life.

FCB Club President, Sandro Rosell, commented on the early success of FCB iCoach: “It has been a great challenge for us to help Barca fans and all football supporters across Europe to improve their health and we are happy that the European Commission has worked with us to bring this opportunity about. Our motto ‘Més que un club’ communicates our commitment and responsibility to our fans. The impressive uptake of “Quit Smoking With Barça” has motivated us to use our voice and do our upmost to encourage smokers to win their battle against tobacco; by offering them the tools, guidance and encouragement to kick the habit for good. We would like to congratulate all those who have signed up to”Quit Smoking with Barça”.

Speaking of the collaboration with FC Barcelona, Tonio Borg, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, said: “I have high expectations for the Commission’s collaboration with Barcelona Football Club – “Barça”, to help Europe’s 140 million smokers become “Unstoppable” by quitting smoking. Since the launch of this partnership in December 2012, there have been more than 60,000 registrations to Barça’s ‘iCoach’, proving that the European Commission’s long experience in tobacco control initiatives, combined with the status of Barça, has proved a winning combination in improving the health and lives of football fans across Europe.”

Both FC Barcelona and the European Commission have significant achievements in anti-smoking initiatives. In January 2012, FCB became the first club of the Spanish Legue to voluntarily declare its stadium and all facilities at Camp Nou a non-smoking zone. At the same time, ‘Quit Smoking with Barça’ is part of the award winning campaign “Ex-Smokers are Unstoppable”(www.exsmokers.eu), an initiative of the European Commission already supporting over 355,000 smokers and ex-smokers to live smoke-free lives.

Rosell: “Barça are still the best team in the world”

Sandro Rosell.
Club President Sandro Rosell looking forward to Tito Villanova’s return The President featured in an interview with the Barcelona based sports daily, El Mundo Deportivo this Monday.

So many great days to choose from

Sandro Rosell also revealed that it was a great day when he renewed Messi’s contract till 2018, but: “maybe not the best ever as President – there was also the day we won the Champions League at Wembley, but maybe the best day will be when Tito is fully cured, just as it was when Abidal recovered. There are so many great days that come to mind”.

FC Barcelona President Sandro Rosell gave a wide ranging interview to the local sports daily El Mundo Deportivo this Monday, fielding questions about Tito Vilanova, Sergio Busquets’ progress and his pleasure at Eric Abidal’s recovery.

Tito’s return “the best possible news”

Looking forward tothe return of coach Tito Villanova, Sandro Rosell explained: “it’s the best possible news for us – even better than our fightback against Milan, because one is about human character and the other a sporting feat. The human side should always come first” and also revealed he’d spoken to Tito: “after the Deportivo game and after the win against Milan, when I told him ‘this result is a fantastic way to give you the welcome back that you deserve. We are waiting for you with the same desire as you are keen to come back, or even more so”.

[[DES_1]]

“The best team in the world”

The President also spoke of the Milan win, claiming: “it took a weight of my shoulders from a purely sporting point of view – I want Barça to win every game, even a friendly, so that the players and members enjoy themselves and in this case because it gives Tito the best possible situation for his return, but it wasn’t to do with overcoming any sporting or institutional crisis, nor of our values, I never saw that as existing – Barça are still the best team in the world”.

Praise for Busquets

With Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta just getting better and better, the President was asked if their contracts would be improved in line with this and he made it clear that: “the two are top world class players – I’d say the best in the game in their positions. The Club has to be sensitive to that fact and we will be”. Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque recently said of he could come back as a player, he’d love to be like Busquets, but the President would be satisfied with less than that: “I’d just like to come back as someone who made the starting XI – I always seemed to be on the bench! They say that nobody is irreplaceable, but I really think that for us, Busquets is”. Xavi, Messi and Iniesta are sometimes called the holy trinity, but Sr Rosell thinks Busquets is: “up there with the three of them– maybe we need to remain them the four musketeers!”

Neymar : “As a fan, there’s something different about him”

Sr Rosell also revealed his admiration for Neymar – all the while insisting that he was speaking as a football fan and not the President of the Club and stressing that: “he’s a Santos player till 2014 and so as President I have nothing to say about him. As a football fan it’s clear to see that he has something different about him. He’s like Romario, Ronaldinho, Maradona, Messi... players the members here really appreciate”.

Sala París will be the venue for a testimonial event in honour of two legendary players, on occasion of the game between Barça and Mallorca

FC Barcelona and the Agrupació Barça Jugadors have organised an institutional event to honour two former players, Josep Seguer and Antoni Ramallets. It’s all going to happen on Saturday April 6 on occasion of the Liga game between FC Barcelona and RCD Mallorca at the Camp Nou.

Sala París will be the stage at 12.30 as the Barça president, Sandro Rosell, and the president of the Agrupació Barça Jugadors, Ramon Alfonseda, welcome the two very special guests. Both players will joined by relatives, former colleagues and several representatives of different social and institutional areas of FC Barcelona. The event will be presented by reporter Pere Escobar and the guests will include former FCB players Luis Suárez, Ferran Olivella, Salvador Sadurní, Josep Maria Fusté and Robert Fernández plus women’s footballer Carme Nieto.

First of many

Shortly before FC Barcelona and RCD Mallorca kick off their match, the president of FC Barcelona will be welcoming Antoni Ramallets and Josep Seguer into the presidential box. This is the first of what are hoped to be many similar initiatives to honour the players that have helped shape the history of FC Barcelona.

Antoni Ramallets

Born in Barcelona in 1924, he joined FC Barcelona from Europa. In 1949, an injury to regular keeper Velasco gave him his first opportunity to display his many qualities: speed, agility and an astute mind. He played through two of the club’s greatest periods, that of the Five Cups and the golden era under manager Helenio Herrera. He also featured in Spain’s first ever World Cup squad in Brazil in 1950, where he earned the moniker of the Maracanà Cat. In 1962 Barça entertained SV Hamburg in a testimonial in his honour, and he is now the most senior member of the Agrupació Barça Jugadors.

Josep Seguer

Born in Parets del Vallès in 1923, Josep Seguer spent his entire playing career at FC Barcelona. In 1940 he joined the amateur team and progressed to the first team in 1943, staying there for fourteen seasons. It was mainly as an inside midfielder that he participated in all of the club’s major conquests of the 1940s, although he was famed for his ability to fill in wherever required, and he was often seen playing at full back. His skill and strength made him one of the core members of the team that famously won five cups in one season, and after hanging up his boots he went into management in 1959. He was assistant manager to Salvador Artigas, who he replaced as head coach after he was sacked early in the 1969-70 season. In 1970, he became manager of Barça Atlètic.

Kubala i Tete Montoliu
On Thursday 28th March, it’s the 80th anniversary of the birth of this illustrious jazz composer and pianist, and passionate Barça fan.

As part of the Barça Culture initiative, the Club is commemorating the 10th anniversary of the death of Tete Montoliu with a revival of a jazz version of the Barça Anthem played by the Ignasi Terraza Trio as a posthumous tribute in the Camp Nou.

Tete Montoliu, the virtuoso jazz pianist, would have been 80 this Thursday. A leading figure in the jazz world, he never lost an opportunity to proclaim another of his great passions, FC Barcelona. Although blind from birth, he never let this interfere with his enjoyment both of music and Barça.

On 27th March 1996, before the match against Tenerife, the then Barça president, Josep Lluís Núñez, awarded him the gold and diamond Club insignia in the Directors Box of the Camp Nou. Later, on 24th November 2007, the Club organised a posthumous tribute to Tete Montoliu coinciding with the 10th anniversary of his death. Before the match against Recreativo there was a concert on the pitch in which the Ignasi Terraza Trio -with Jordi Rossy and Dimitri Skidanov- interpreted a jazz version of the Barça Anthem.
