Messi takes centre stage in China
Messi’s new world record was the focus of attention on two of China’s most popular microblogging sites: Tencent Weibo and Sina Weibo. In total, 30 million posts made mention of the Argentine's 86-goal feat. The post Messi made on his official Tencent Weibo page was shared over 5,000 times. In addition, FC Barcelona, Gerard Piqué and Club director Dídac Less congratulated Messi on their Tencent Weibo accounts.
Leo Messi became the centre of attention when he scored a brace against Betis last night in FC Barcelona’s 1-2 victory at the Benito Villamarín. He also stole the limelight online when he broke Gerd ‘Der Bomber’ Müller’s record. On Twitter and Facebook, the striker’s achievement sent shockwaves around the world.
Twitter
On Twitter, 34,888 tweets mentioning the Argentine were posted at 21:28 this Sunday evening. In addition, from 21:00 to 22:00, 482,000 people were talking about Messi on the popular micro-blogging site. More impressive still, more than one billion tweets were posted about the Blaugrana forward from 16:00 (Sunday) through 1:00 (Monday). It’s worth nothing that Twitter registers impressions based on the amount of times a keyword - in this case Messi - shows up on a user’s timeline.
Facebook
The story of Messi’s 86 goals in 2012 was also popular on Facebook, where the Argentine has an official page. The message the striker posted on his page after the match received over 200,000 likes. It’s very close to the number of likes that FC Barcelona received on its Facebook posts regarding the striker’s feat (the first when Messi equalled Müller and the second when he broke the German’s record). Overall, FC Barcelona’s Facebook page notched up over 500,000 likes on Sunday.
It’s also worth nothing Leo Messi’s impact on Google+, where Barça enjoy the largest following of any other professional football club. On the social networking site, more than 2,000 users showed their support for Messi by giving a +1 to the Club’s posts regarding the striker’s record.
