Arroyo: "Our defence strategy foresaw that this could end with the CAS"

Manel Arroyo was speaking this morning to Barça TV
The Club has asked FIFA to provide the grounds for its verdict announced yesterday, an essential requirement before presenting an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport

FC Barcelona have been quick to respond to the ratification of the sanction pronounced yesterday by the FIFA Appeal Committee regarding the breach of regulations concerning the transfer and registration of children under 18 years of age. Minutes after the announcement, the Club issued a public statement explaining that it shall continue to defend its interests before the highest legal authority for sport, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS).

This morning, Club vice-president and Head of Communications and Media, Manel Arroyo, evaluated the situation and told the Club’s media that its defence strategy had considered the possibility of the sanction being ratified and so plans had already been made plans to recur to the CAS. The legal services are therefore already working on the case, and are now waiting for FIFA to provide the grounds for its resolution, which were requested earlier today.

In compliance with the resolution, for the next 90 days the Club will be working with FIFA to analyse the administrative situation of each of the children that are included in the enquiry, in order to resolve any cases in which it is understood that there has been a breach of regulations.

The vice-president insists that the Board of Directors will not be discussing matters of a sporting nature, but that with the signings made this summer and the promising players in the reserve and youth teams, the team’s future is guaranteed.

Arroyo also commented on how, thanks to its Masia model, FC Barcelona has set new standards in world football, and that this model is as valid as it always has been and will continue to be one of the Club’s priorities.

Statements by vice-president Manel Arroyo:

“There was always a chance that the FIFA Appeals Committee would reject our appeal. It seemed like the evidence and arguments that we presented to FIFA would be enough, but we had considered the possibility of the Committee ratifying FIFA’s sentence. Obviously, when faced by a situation like this you have to take all possible scenarios into account, so our strategy was designed with the possibility of going to the CAS in mind. The legal services are already working on all the details.”

“All of our sporting plans have been made with a scenario like this in mind. Some of the signings have been made as foresights regarding the future needs of the team. The Board of Directors cannot discuss sporting issues, but we feel that with the players we already have here we have enough to continue going forward”.

“The Masia model has in no way been put under question or in danger. Quite the opposite, it has been strengthened. We have set standards for the training of young footballers and are working for the wording of the regulation to be adapted to such a spirit. Both the president and the people in international bodies are working for this to happen”.

The main focus of the meeting was on the Club’s sporting activity but the issue of the previous board’s social liability was also on the agenda

The Board of FC Barcelona met at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper on Monday afternoon to assess the progress made in the first team and Barça B last season, as well as the transfer activity in and out of the Club.

But of course, FC Barcelona isn’t just a football club so the directors also reviewed the work of the basketball, handball and Futsal teams.

Apart from purely sporting matters, the directors discussed the liability issue affecting the previous Board.  Following a wide-ranging debate, the Board decided by a majority vote to continue the current process.

Before the meeting, there was a working lunch for the directors, led by Josep Maria Bartomeu, manager Luis Enrique and his coaching staff and director of football Andoni Zubizarreta.  A chance to exchange views and get to know each other better.

“Tourism forms a basic part of our economic recovery and this collaboration with Barça will boost the economy, culture and internationalisation of Catalonia”.

Statements by vice-president Carles Vilarrubí:

“We are very pleased with the results of this agreement and to be able help our country with tourism matters, which are so important for our economic recovery. After two years, today is the liturgy of that success. The renewal of the contract shows that it is achieving the expected results”.

“Throughout the four years of this Board’s mandate, we have sought to offer the platform of what FC Barcelona means in order to project and promote the name of Catalonia around the world. We put the huge social phenomenon that is this club at the service of the country”.

“As president Suñol said, ‘Sport and Citizenship’ make us responsible for our country and our objectives. As well as winning and getting the ball in the net, we have to make the global phenomenon that Barça is, the leader in social networks and the focus of so much media attention, into something that can also serve our institutions”

The banner will be unfurled along the one side of the pitch prior to today's game with Athletic Club Bilbao

On Saturday before the start of the Liga fixture with Athletic Bilbao (6.00 PM CET at the Camp Nou) a huge 45 x 46 metre banner will be unfurled across the length of the touchline in the colours of FC Barcelona and of the Catalan flag, along with the symbol commemorating the Tricentenary of the end of the Siege of Barcelona.

The Siege was one of the final battles of the War of Spanish Succession (1701–1714) between the Grand Alliance (Archduke Charles of Austria, backed by Britain and the Netherlands) and Philip V of Spain, backed by France. Barcelona was being bombarded from Montjuïc Castle, but withstood the assault until 20,000 Bourbon forces arrived in 1714 and finally conquered the city on on 11 September. This defeat is now commemorated as the National Day of Catalonia.

The Spanish Football League has also given the go-ahead for Barcelona to wear its red and yellow striped uniform, the colours of the Catalan flag, in today’s encounter with the Basques. The motion to don the shirt, usually reserved only for away fixtures, in commemoration of the Tricentenary, was unanimously approved by the Board of Directors.

The Futbol Club Barcelona Board of Directors, on the occasion of the start of the court hearing with regard to the liability claim proposed by the Ordinary General Assembly of October 15, 2010, wishes to state the following:

The Futbol Club Barcelona Board of Directors, on the occasion of the start of the court hearing with regard to the liability claim proposed by the Ordinary General Assembly of October 15, 2010, wishes to state the following:

1. The cause of the liability claim is the presumed breach, by the previous Board of Directors, of the dispositions of Law 10/1990 on Sport, which establishes that Boards that assume responsibility for the management of a football club may not spend more than the club’s income during their full mandate period.

2. The accounts for the 2009/2010 financial year, from which arise the losses that have motivated this liability claim, were audited by Deloitte, the same official Club auditor that had been previously designated in 2003 by the Board presided by Joan Laporta and that has audited the Club’s accounts for the last ten years.

3. The Club’s auditor presented the current Board with its report, according to which the accounts formulated by the previous Board did not reflect the economic reality of the last financial year, due to the inclusion of four exceptions and three uncertainties.

4. According to the dispositions of the Law on Sport and accountancy regulations, bad-debt provisions should have been made for these seven imprecisions, and so the final accounts of that Board required reformulation in accordance with accountancy regulations and the criteria validated by the auditor.

5. In compliance with the law and with commitments assumed with regard to the members, the current Board submitted the audited accounts without exceptions for approval by the Club’s Ordinary General Assembly, which reflect major losses, and also called for its decision regarding the opportuneness of presenting a liability action.

6. With both motions approved and in compliance with the Assembly’s demands, the Club presented the relevant claim that is now the subject of a court hearing.

7. The judge’s decision will establish the grounds and criteria to be applied in order to determine the liability of the Boards in relation with the financial results of their administrations.

FC Barcelona, out of respect for the procedure and the persons involved, shall make no further public statement until the judge has pronounced a verdict.

The sponsorship deal between FC Barcelona and Avea began with an agreement signed in 2011, which made Avea one of the club’s official partners and its telecommunications partner in Turkey. In May 2012, the first agreement for organising the FCBEscola Camp Avea was signed, and a total of four editions have already been held, two in Istanbul and two more in Antalya in 2012 and 2013. The sponsorship agreement was renewed for three more years in 2013. Given the success of the experience and the good understanding between FCBEscola and Avea, work began on a possible collaboration between the two organisations. Finally, in 2014 an agreement was signed for the new FCBEscola Istanbul Avea, meaning that FC Barcelona now has thirteen such schools around the world.

Statements by vice-president of FC Barcelona, Javier Faus, and CEO of Avea, Erkan Akdemir.

“This deal strengthens Barça’s ties with Turkey”

“This deal shows that FC Barcelona wants to do much more than merely sign sponsorship deals with our partners, and also seeks collaboration with other sporting and social projects, as is the case with the setting up of FCBEscola Istanbul Avea. The Club has once again strengthened its ties with Turkey, a country with a huge passion for football and where Barcelona has a large number of supporters”.

“Our goal is for FCBEscola Istanbul to contribute to Turkish football”

“Our camps attracted so much interest all around Turkey and motivated us to give this training in a much effective and professional structure in the 10th year of our foundation. And now, with FCBEscola Istanbul Avea, we make this much more comprehensive and much better equipped in line with the school schedule. Our goal is to make FCBEscola Istanbul Avea an important brand contributing to Turkish football. We are really proud to see that the cooperation that initiated 3 years ago with the world’s leading football club FC Barcelona has reached this point.”
